Preserve proper spacing for permanent teeth with custom space maintainers and orthodontic spacers. A simple, preventive step that avoids bigger orthodontic problems later.

Space maintainers preserve room for permanent teeth when a baby tooth is lost prematurely due to decay, trauma, or extraction. Without this small placeholder, neighboring teeth tend to drift into the empty space, leaving no room for the permanent tooth and often leading to crowding or the need for more involved orthodontic treatment later.
Some families use the term "orthodontic spacers" for the small appliances that hold space in a child's developing mouth — the same concept as a space maintainer, and something we place routinely at Canton Pediatric Dentistry. Whether it's a single missing baby molar or several teeth affected by early loss, a custom-fit spacer keeps the arch open until the permanent tooth is ready to erupt.
These appliances also help guide the surrounding teeth into a more favorable position, which can reduce or simplify future orthodontic care. Children adapt quickly, and once cemented they feel like a normal part of the mouth within a few days.
Baby teeth serve as natural space maintainers for permanent teeth. When a primary tooth is lost early, adjacent teeth may drift into the space, creating insufficient room for the permanent tooth. This can lead to crowding, impaction, or more extensive orthodontic treatment later. A space maintainer holds the space open until the permanent tooth erupts naturally.
We offer both fixed and removable options. Fixed maintainers are cemented in place and include band-and-loop appliances for single teeth and lingual holding arches for multiple teeth. Removable maintainers are similar to partial dentures and can include a tooth-colored replacement tooth when appearance matters. We recommend the option that best fits your child's age, cooperation level, and dental situation.
Placement is typically comfortable and completed in one or two short visits. For fixed appliances, we take an impression, custom-fabricate the maintainer, and cement it at a follow-up visit. Anesthesia is rarely needed. We check fit carefully and give you clear at-home care instructions.
Good hygiene and food choices keep the maintainer working properly. We coach families on brushing around the appliance, foods to avoid (sticky candy, ice, chewing gum), and what to do if something feels loose. Regular checkups let us monitor the appliance and the developing permanent tooth, and remove the maintainer at just the right time.
